Our human body has a natural inbuilt mechanism that allows it to detox itself. It is done by these chief organs:
- Liver, first organ to come in contact with the toxins and takes anti measures,
- Colon, which flushes out the toxic chemicals,
- Kidneys which purifies the bloodstream,
- Skin as it eliminates toxins via sweat, and
- Lungs as they purify the air we breathe.
Why should we detox? What is its need?
While detox helps us to lose weight, that is not it’s intended. The weight is lost due to the fasting that an individual does and elimination of stored waste. The main aim of detoxification is to clean these organs principally. One can relate it to cleaning the filters in our RO purifiers. Just as our RO systems need time to time maintenance similarly our body needs to give rest to its filters and this is possible by having a diet specifically targeted for the same.
Due to the increase in the environmental toxins, the need to detoxify the body ourselves has arisen and this overwhelming need has lead to this concept of detox diets and meal plans.
When Should We Detoxify?
Our body has various methods to let us know when it needs to detox. The symptoms can range from bloating, constipation, congestion, unexplainable increase in weight even though there is no change in diet, tiredness or low energy level, indigestion, skin and hair problems to yeast infections, UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) and allergies. If three or more than three of these symptoms are being experienced by an individual then it is a signal to cleanse our body.
How to Detoxify?
While on detox it is necessary to keep our body hydrated so one needs to keep on a healthy intake of water every 90 minutes to two hours. Rather than having three meals as we usually do, one can have a number of small meals.
Pre-Breakfast: Start the day with lukewarm water mixed with a tbsp of honey, lemon, and ginger early in the morning followed by green tea.
Breakfast: A vegetable juice with 1 beetroot, 3-4 small carrots, 1 tomato, 1 cucumber, a handful spinach and ½ cup parsley. Adding Chia seeds or Flax seeds is also proved to be beneficial.
Between Breakfast and Lunch: Have a natural laxative herbal tea. It can be burdock, cayenne pepper, chamomile, cilantro, chicory, dandelion, fenugreek, garlic, ginger, ginseng, licorice root, milk thistle, peppermint and/or red clover.
Lunch: Steamed vegetables. If you really want to have something heavy go for brown rice. Avoid wheat and its derivatives.
Mid-Afternoon: Have another vegetable drink for an instant boost to your energy level.
Early Dinner: Have another glass of fresh juice including 1-2 apples, 1 banana, a handful of Kale leaves, 1 Bell Pepper, a handful of berries.
Before Bed: Take another of those teas to relax and sleep early.
What all should be avoided?
Make sure to avoid milk and dairy products, gluten, wheat, coffee, alcohol, soda, soy, creamed vegetables, whey protein, peanuts, processed sugar, beef, pork and corn oil.
How can I do a Complete Detox?
For a complete detox, one doesn’t only needs to follow a healthy diet but also healthy living. Exercising is a major necessity be it yoga or walking only, especially outdoors (in nature). One needs to make sure that they regularly sweat which can be done by sauna, work-outs, or in steam rooms. The self-reflection which includes meditation and relaxation should also be practiced regularly. Lastly, techniques like acupuncture and massages are also recommended. Proper sleep can also help in giving our body rest and recharging itself.
Tip: Make sure to drink lots of water. Dehydration is the major cause of accumulation of toxins so keep a healthy intake of water to flush those toxins out.
